Social Justice activism requires examining practices that other segments of our society take for granted in day-to-day living. One of the current issues now tilting for mainstream discussion is the crated confinement of animals by large corporate producers of pork and chicken.



Born to Die (a free form poem)

Named only It to avoid
unnecessary attachment,
It was intelligent, self-aware, and
possessed incredible memory.
It knew the difference between
kindness and pain, between life and death,
It once reportedly exhibited joy,
when caressed by a giggling child.

It shared our common ancestry, our DNA,
yet was doomed at birth, to live
in crated confinement. The certainty of
imprisonment and a deliberate death,
resided in It’s remarkable mind.

After It was killed, her body
became available for medical research,
replacing human parts, and two-dollar
sausage biscuits, at the McDonald’s
drive-thru window.
